“Feather Craft Workshop”

Texas Prairie Rivers Region will be hosting a “Feather Craft Workshop” on Saturday April 16th in Canadian, TX. TPRR will be teaming up with the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Jackie Jordan in hosting a one day workshop at the Canadian Courts Conference Center. The event is open to all interested people in the Texas panhandle region. The NWTF has sponsored several of these seminars throughout the United States at various venues such as their annual national convention, which attracts over 30,000 people annually, and at their “Women In the Outdoors” events in different locations in many states

Jackie makes her home in Edgefield, SC, which is the headquarters of the NWTF, and has used feathers in creating art for the last 10 years. She uses various size turkey feathers to accentuate door and mantle wreaths, scented candles, baskets, photo frames, ladies purses, and decorative boxes. Texas Prairie Rivers is sponsoring Jackie to come to Canadian, TX and teach interested people how to use feathers from wild turkeys to produce art pieces, which have been sold or just enjoyed by people in our region. Jackie is married to Jay Jordan, wildlife biologist for the NWTF who is responsible for  the federations “Energy for Wildlife” program that partners with utility/pipeline companies across America.

Luke Lewis TPRR, biologist recognized this untapped resource on his first visit to Lipscomb, TX where the town on a good day boosts 42 citizens and over 200 hundred wild turkeys, which also make their home in and around the county courthouse.  Lewis, a former employee of the NWTF quickly realized the town of Lipscomb has a great asset for just viewing wild turkeys in their community. “I was amazed at the great opportunity to simply collect the feathers that fall off the birds in this large flock, near areas they roost each night, or picked up in the residents yards as they feed daily”.

Local residents Jan Luna and Debby Opdyke own an art gallery called “Naturally Yours” which specializes in local art, scented sage candles, and several varieties of jellies and preserves collected and created from the local region. People in this small town have not realized how they could utilized feathers deposited daily by these big birds. There are many landowners in our region that winter large turkey flocks around their farms and ranches that could collect the feathers to create art many people find attractive. This idea has culminated in bringing in an expert artist to teach interested individuals how to use these feathers for attractive art.

TPRR is encouraging any interested individuals in our region to send in their registration of $20 for the one day event, which will start at 9:00 AM and conclude at 3:00 PM. Interested attendees should  RSVP their registration to “Feather Craft Workshop” 216 South 2nd St/, Canadian, TX 79014, or call 806-323-5397 for information.
